About Lynn Willis

Bio photoA native of Kingsport, Tennessee, Lynn Willis discovered the joy of photography as a child during the late 1970’s with his dad’s old Brownie camera. Growing up hiking, paddling and spelunking with his father set the seed for adventure. Soon came the rock climbing and rappelling experiences at summer camp in Banner Elk, North Carolina (later wedding site) that led him to eventual self-sufficiency with climbing. A big thanks goes out to his parents who bought Lynn's first pair of climbing shoes, at age 16, while they stood in Yosemite's Camp 4 parking lot. The shoes were one of eight handmade pairs that a Mexican climber brought up to extend his stay in The Valley. Those leather, leopard print climbing shoes changed everything right then and there. In 1988 at the University of Tennessee, he developed more of a full-time passion for climbing which enabled him to travel to beautiful places and capture action sports and the environment in which it takes place. And yes, there was a short phase of wearing lycra tights!

Summers were spent climbing in the West and capturing the mountain environment. Lynn’s portfolio includes images of adventure sports and mountain landscapes from the Appalachians to the Himalayas. Currently, he’s focusing on portraying outdoor sports and lifestyle images specific to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Lynn believes the High Country of North Carolina is an ideal playground and training ground with a lifetime of adventure to be had.

One of Lynn's climbing images won first prize in the adventure category of the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition in 2006 and he placed in the same competition the next several years as well. His photographs have been published in various outdoor catalogs and magazines including Rock & Ice, Climbing, Urban Climber, Paraglider International and Blue Ridge Outdoors. Lynn entered and placed in a reader photo contest in National Geographic Adventure magazine as well. He’s had images in a couple of calendars – one from faraway in Malaysia and the others close to home in the Ray’s Weather calendar and Carolina Climbers Coalition calendar. Lynn was the main photographer for a climbing guidebook published by The Mountaineers for the state of Oregon with the cover shot and more than 50 photos inside the book which entailed three trips to Oregon. One of his passions includes making his images available to non-profits and conservancy groups and so far his images have been used by The Conservation Fund and the Blue Ridge Conservancy and Land Trust Day advertisements. Lynn works in the marketing department as a photographer and graphic designer for Mast General Stores.
